By Breaking Belize News Staff: Fernando Allen, a 42-year-old Caye Caulker resident accused of attempting to murder a teenager, remains on remand and is seeking closure in his case after spending the past seven months behind bars. Allen is charged with the October 20, 2022 stabbing of 19-year-old Rafael Marin, an incident that left Marin needing four surgeries to recover from his injuries.
Allen appeared before Justice Derick Sylvester in the High Court on Wednesday for a Case Management Conference (CMC) in preparation for his trial. However, Allen remains unrepresented and expressed frustration with the delay in his case. Justice Sylvester provided Allen with CMC forms, explaining the legal process and advising him on his rights, including the possibility of obtaining legal representation.
The Crown, represented by Crown Counsel Glenfield Dennison, informed the court that they would review the evidence to determine whether the charge against Allen could be reduced. Allen indicated his willingness to plead guilty to a lesser charge, stating that he wants to resolve the matter and move forward with his life.
Justice Sylvester explained the plea bargain process to Allen, emphasizing that he should only plead guilty if he acknowledges his guilt. He also informed Allen about the option to request a sentencing indication, which would provide him with an estimate of the sentence he might face if he pleads guilty.
Allen, who described the past year as devastating, shared with the court that he has lost his home, children, and stability since his bail was revoked. His case is set to proceed with the CMC on Monday, January 27, 2025, during which Allen is expected to have the opportunity to consult with an attorney before making any decisions regarding a plea.
The attempted murder charge against Allen is a serious offense, and the court emphasized the importance of ensuring he receives a fair trial or a proper resolution to the case.
