By Breaking Belize News Staff: A 29-year-old construction worker from Cayo has avoided further jail time after pleading guilty to robbing a woman last year. Willian Archila was fined instead of being sentenced to prison, thanks to his remorse and his role as the sole provider for his family.
Archila admitted to robbing 35-year-old sales representative Anisha Robateau on June 21, 2024. He forcibly took her black and gold purse, valued at $60, which contained $115 in cash, Social Security cards, and two bank cards, totaling $282.09 in value. The robbery occurred around 5:45 a.m. at the corner of Lindos Alley and Vernon Street, where Archila overpowered Robateau and fled the scene.
During sentencing at Court #3 last week, Archila’s common-law wife pleaded on his behalf, explaining that their two children rely on him as their sole provider. Taking this into account, along with Archila’s remorse and lack of a prior criminal record, the Senior Magistrate opted for a hefty fine instead of additional jail time.
Archila was fined $2,500, plus $5 in court costs, with a payment deadline of June 2, 2025. Failure to pay will result in six months of imprisonment. He was also ordered to compensate the victim $282.09 by February 17, 2025, or face further penalties.
The court emphasized that the decision to impose a fine rather than jail time considered the mitigating factors but also served as a warning, given the serious and prevalent nature of robbery offenses.
