By Horace Palacio: Belize has unveiled a groundbreaking redesign of its currency notes, featuring a nationalist theme that removes the image of the British monarch for the first time in the country’s history. The reveal, held at the Civic Center in Belize City, showcases a shift toward celebrating Belize’s cultural identity and independence.
The new currency notes prominently feature national heroes George Price and Philip Goldson on the $100 and $50 bills, respectively, highlighting their contributions to Belize’s independence and nation-building. Prime Minister John Briceño described the redesign as a reflection of the country’s heritage and values. “These new notes honor Belize’s legacy of hard work, peace, and justice,” Briceño said.
Designed with intricate details, the notes incorporate Belize’s iconic landscapes, flora, fauna, and national symbols. The tactile features aim to make the currency accessible to visually impaired individuals, while advanced security measures ensure protection against counterfeiting.
“These banknotes are a representation of Belize itself,” said Gareth Evans of DeLaRue, the production company. “They showcase the pride, beauty, and unity of the nation.”
Central Bank Governor Kareem Michael reassured the public that the exchange rate of two Belize dollars to one U.S. dollar remains unchanged. The notes are expected to enter circulation mid-year, following an extensive public education campaign to familiarize citizens with the new design and its features.
This historic redesign comes at a time when Belize is experiencing record-breaking tourism numbers and economic recovery. Officials hope the currency’s new look will inspire national pride while reinforcing the country’s identity on the global stage.
