By Aaron Humes: A local sales representative has reported being scammed while attempting to purchase two iPhones through a Facebook Marketplace account.
The scam victim visited the Crimes Investigation Branch on Thursday morning to file a complaint about her experience. On January 20, she encountered an account under the name Arnoldo Pott, which featured listings for iPhones. Interested in a blue iPhone 13 priced at $550, she initiated contact through Facebook Messenger.
After confirming the availability of the device, she negotiated to purchase both a blue iPhone 13 and a grey iPhone Pro Max 13 for a total of $1,850. Following discussions, she agreed to make an initial deposit of $925 to a bank account provided by Pott, purportedly belonging to his stepdaughter.
However, when Campos arrived at Belize Bank Limited on January 22 to make the deposit, she discovered that the account name did not match the one provided by Pott. The account belonged to someone else. She contacted and questioned Pott, who reassured her that the deposit could proceed, leading her to transfer the funds despite her concerns.
After sending a receipt of the transaction to Pott, the complainant was promised that the phones would be sent via Tropic Air later that day. Yet, when she sought updates, she found herself unable to contact Pott, who failed to respond to her messages.
As of now, she has not received the devices and has not heard from Pott since that day. Police are investigating the identity of Arnoldo Pott and the associated account holder. Anyone with additional information related to this case is encouraged to contact local law enforcement.
