By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has updated its assessment on the origins of the COVID-19 pandemic, now saying it is “more likely” the virus emerged from a laboratory rather than from nature, a spokesperson confirmed on Saturday, Reuters report.

This marks a shift from the agency’s previous stance, which could not definitively conclude whether the virus originated in a lab or through natural transmission.

The assessment was made following a directive from former CIA Director William Burns during the final weeks of the Biden administration, calling for a more conclusive determination due to the pandemic’s historical importance.

The CIA emphasized that it has “low confidence” in its assessment, which still leaves both lab and natural origin theories plausible.

The agency did not clarify whether new intelligence was used in reaching this conclusion.

China’s government, which has consistently denied the lab leak theory, has accused the U.S. of politicizing the issue, noting its participation in global research efforts to determine the virus’s origins.

CIA Director John Ratcliffe, confirmed on Friday, expressed strong support for the lab leak theory, calling it a priority to publicly assess the pandemic’s origins.

He stated that intelligence, science, and common sense pointed to a leak from the Wuhan Institute of Virology as the most likely cause of the outbreak. The Chinese government has rejected this theory, claiming it lacks credibility.
