By Zoila Palma: A deadly crowd crush at India’s Maha Kumbh Mela festival on Wednesday left dozens dead and many others injured as millions gathered to bathe in the holy waters of the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, CNN reports.
The incident occurred when a barrier near the river broke, sending people scrambling toward the riverbanks.
Initial reports from local hospitals confirmed at least 35 deaths, with the toll expected to rise. Police later stated that around 90 people were taken to hospitals, with 30 confirmed dead.
The crush occurred during Mauni Amavasya, one of the festival’s most significant days, when over 100 million Hindu devotees are expected to participate.
Witnesses described chaotic scenes as people were pushed and fell in the stampede, with some separated from their families.
Indian Prime Minister Narendra Modi expressed condolences for the victims, while Uttar Pradesh Chief Minister Yogi Adityanath stated the situation was under control, though many were seriously injured. Despite warnings, large crowds continued to gather for the ritual dip throughout the day.
