By Zoila Palma Gonzalez: In response to US President Donald Trump’s asylum policies, many migrants are turning to Mexico for refuge, AFP reports.
Arianne Dominguez, a 24-year-old Cuban, had hoped for asylum in the US but was shocked when Trump’s administration halted a key app for processing claims. Left with few options, she and others are now seeking asylum in Mexico.
At Mexico’s Commission for Refugee Assistance (COMAR), migrants from Venezuela, Cuba, and other countries are waiting in long lines to apply for refuge.
Juan Carmona, a Venezuelan mechanic, chose to stay in Mexico with his wife, aiming to remain legal rather than undocumented.
In 2024, Mexico granted refuge to over 26,800 foreigners, but the process is slow, with many migrants enduring long waits.
For some, like Cuban migrant Jose Ricardo Moreno, the shift in US policies means Mexico is now the best alternative.
Trump’s new border policies, including reinstating the “Remain in Mexico” program and deploying more military to the border, have made it harder for migrants to reach the US.
As a result, many are seeking to build a life in Mexico instead. Venezuelan Shakira Chaparro, waiting in Tijuana, emphasized that crossing illegally is now too risky, making staying in Mexico a safer option.
