By Aaron Humes: Police are currently investigating a case of alleged bigamy after a domestic worker from Guinea Grass Village, Orange Walk District, reported her husband for secretly marrying another woman while still legally wed to her – and refusing her pleas to divorce.
Anastacia Garcia, a 50-year-old resident of Guinea Grass, revealed that she married a man named Javier Garcia on September 28, 1997, in their hometown. The couple lived together in Benque Viejo Del Carmen, Cayo District, for 14 years until a series of events uncovered shocking truths about their relationship.
According to Garcia, during their time in Benque Viejo, Javier lost his identification documents and applied for replacements. It was during this process that Anastacia discovered that Javier was not his real name, raising suspicions about his true identity.
In December 2010, the family relocated back to Guinea Grass. Shortly thereafter, Javier moved to San Pedro Town for work, leaving Garcia behind. By April 2013, he informed her that he wanted to end their marriage, citing that their relationship was not working.
The situation took another turn in July 2015 when Garcia learned that her husband had remarried in San Pedro Town without her knowledge. When she confronted him about the allegations, he denied them. Seeking clarity, Garcia visited the Registry Department on October 17, 2016. There, she discovered not only that she was still legally married to Javier, but also that he had married another woman on August 9, 2014.
Despite Garcia’s repeated attempts to seek a divorce over the years, her husband did not take any action to legally dissolve their marriage, leaving her still bound to him under the law.
In response to her complaint, local authorities collected evidence, including marriage certificates and identification documents under both of Javier’s names. The investigation has led to Javier’s detention; he is a 61-year-old security officer residing in the San Pedrito area of San Pedro Town.
Authorities are still in the process of gathering further evidence as the investigation unfolds.
