By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The highly anticipated Northern Regional High School Football Tournament will be held on Saturday, February 8, at the Orange Walk People’s Stadium. Organized by the Northern Sports Teachers Association (NSTA), the tournament promises to be a thrilling event for football enthusiasts, with intense competition among the boys’ teams.
The boys’ matches will begin the semifinal round with Zone 2 champs Bishop Martin High School (BMHS) taking on Zone 4 champs San Pedro High School (SPHS) at 10:00 am. The second match will pit Zone 1 champions Escuela Secundaria Técnica Mexico (ESTM) against Zone 3 champions Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA).
The winners will play for the championship. The team that emerges as the Northern Champions will then go on to the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) championship.
The better loser in the semifinals with earn third place.
New champions will emerge this year as last year’s champions, Muffles College, who also won the NSSSA championship failed to advance to the Northern Regionals this year.
Incidentally, the girls championship, which kicks off at 8:45 am, is held along with the boys championship. BHSA are the current defending champions in the girls’ category.
The schedule for the boys’ matches is as follows:
Game 2 – BMHS vs. SPHS (Starts right after the first girls match.)
Game 4 – ESTM vs. BHSA
Game 6 – Winner Game 2 vs. Winner Game 4
The girls championship is held along with the boys championship. BHSA are the current defending champions in the girls’ category.
