British High Commission celebrates conclusion of biodiversity restoration project

By Zoila Palma: The British High Commissioner recently visited Belize Botanic Gardens to celebrate the success of a biodiversity restoration project funded by a £200,000 grant from the UK’s Darwin Initiative.

Launched in March 2023, the project focused on diversifying local farming by introducing native plant species suited to Belize’s climate. It aimed to strengthen food security, climate resilience, and farmers’ livelihoods.

Led by Dr. Neil Stuart of the University of Edinburgh, the project worked with smallholder farmers to grow a variety of native herbs, fruits, and trees.

The initiative also supported Belize’s National Agroforestry and Forest Restoration strategies.

British High Commissioner Christine Rowlands praised the project for promoting biodiversity and helping farmers adapt to climate change.

Partners included the University of Edinburgh, Belize Botanic Gardens, and several conservation organizations.

The project’s knowledge is being shared across Belize and Central America to encourage the adoption of sustainable farming practices.
