By Horace Palacio: A recent study conducted by the Ministry of Health and Wellness, the National Drug Abuse Control Council (NDACC), and UNICEF has revealed a worrying trend: substance abuse, particularly among adolescents and women in Belize, has been steadily increasing over the past seven years.
The study, presented at a National Stakeholders Consultation, analyzed data from 2017 to 2024 and highlighted a growing concern over alcohol, marijuana, and other substance misuse among young people. NDACC Director Esner Vellos emphasized the urgency of addressing this issue, stating that substance abuse not only affects individuals but also contributes to societal problems such as domestic violence and crime.
One of the most alarming findings is the rise in substance misuse among young females, leading NDACC to develop more targeted intervention programs. Vellos stressed the importance of holistic prevention efforts, including education, rehabilitation, and support services tailored for at-risk youth and women.
Ken Legins, a UNICEF representative, praised NDACC’s approach, highlighting its alignment with UNICEF’s health promotion strategies. Rather than placing blame, these efforts focus on engaging young people in constructive activities and providing mentorship to encourage healthier lifestyle choices.
With substance abuse becoming a growing crisis, Belizean authorities and organizations are working together to implement proactive solutions. However, continued collaboration and community involvement will be crucial in reversing this troubling trend.
