Wesley College to challenge defending champions Gwen Lizarraga in CSSSA Boys Football Championship Final Saturday

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Wesley College is set to challenge defending champions Gwen Lizarraga High School (Gwen Liz) in the Central Secondary Schools Sports Association (CSSSA) Football Championship at 12:35 am on Saturday, February 15, 2025, at the Marion Jones Sports Complex in Belize City.

Wesley College secured their spot in the final by clinching a dramatic 6-5 victory in a penalty shootout against Anglican Cathedral College (ACC) after a 1-1 draw in extra time. The match, held on Tuesday at the Marion Jones Sports Complex, saw D. Yorke open the scoring for ACC in the 92nd minute, only for G. Nunez to equalize for Wesley in the 110th minute. The penalty shootout was intense, with both teams converting their initial five shots, but Wesley emerged victorious in the sudden death round.

Gwen Liz advanced to the final by decisively defeating Sadie Vernon Technical High School 4-1 in the other semifinal. Calvin Thurton, Raymond Gentle, and Jaymer Bradley were the stars for Gwen Liz, with Thurton scoring twice in the first half and Gentle and Bradley sealing the win in the second half. Defending champions Gwen Liz also go into the final as favorites, having won 5-2 over Wesley in the regular season.

The CSSSA final between Wesley College and Gwen Liz promises to be an exhilarating match, with the champions earning the right to advance to the National Secondary Schools Sports Association (NSSSA) championship, which will be hosted by Mount Carmel High School in Benque Viejo del Carmen on Friday, February 21, 2025.

Sadie Vernon High School and Anglican Cathedral College will play the third-place game at 9:25 am.
