Former employee accused of stealing over half a million dollars from Ambergris Caye business owner

By Aaron Humes: A local business owner on the island of Ambergris Caye has reported a significant theft involving a former employee, valued at more than a half-million Belize dollars. The incident came to light after the owner of El Diamante Ltd, a company focused on condominium development, sought assistance from a business consultant for financial reporting.

The timeline of events goes back to March 2019, when the accused employee was hired to manage bookkeeping tasks for both her development company and the maintenance fund of the Diamante Beach Front Suites. In February 2023, the owner engaged a consultant to compile a financial report necessary for securing a bank loan. It was during this process that discrepancies were flagged, leading to a discovery that numerous checks had been cashed under someone’s personal name.

Confronted the following day, the accused admitted to her wrongdoing, prompting a comprehensive audit of the company’s finances dating back to 2019. The investigation uncovered a series of major irregularities, including unauthorized payments of personal utilities from the company accounts and fraudulent checks.

The accused is currently under investigation for theft.
