Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport receives aerodrome certificate

By Aaron Humes: The Belize Department of Civil Aviation has officially issued an Aerodrome Certificate for the Philip S. W. Goldson International Airport (PGIA). This certification is pivotal in enhancing aviation safety and security at one of the country’s busiest airports.

The Aerodrome Certificate is awarded following standards outlined by the Belize Civil Aviation Act and adheres to recommendations from the International Civil Aviation Organization (ICAO). The certification process, which spanned over 18 months, involved extensive collaboration and rigorous assessment between Department inspectors and technical experts from the Belize Airport Concession Company (BACC).

Significant improvements have been implemented at PGIA as part of the certification process. These enhancements include the establishment of various operational safety and security committees, upgrades to airport lighting and signage, enhanced apron supervision, and comprehensive training initiatives for staff at all levels. Major capital investments have also been made to improve infrastructure and passenger comfort, which are expected to increase overall airport capacity.

A noteworthy highlight of this certification achievement is the advanced training received by the airport’s 17 crash, fire, and rescue officers. They have recently completed the U.S. National Fire Protection Association (NFPA) 1003 Aircraft Rescue Fire Fighting training, positioning them among a select group of only 45,000 certified aerodrome firefighters worldwide.

The issuance of the Aerodrome Certificate signifies the Department’s commitment to ensuring safer and more secure airport operations at the PGIA. It also underscores BACC’s dedication to adhering to international aviation best practices and standards.

“This certification is not only a milestone in our operational journey but a testament to our shared commitment to enhancing air transport connectivity to Belize,” stated a representative from the Department.
