By Horace Palacio: A fishing trip turned violent on Saturday evening, when Akeem Smith, a 32-year-old Belizean fisherman, was shot near North Front Street, Belize City. The attack unfolded around 6:00 p.m. as Smith and three companions—Sheldon Barrow, Brandon Young, and “Delly”—were making their way back to the city via boat.
As they approached the San Pedro Belize Express parking lot, two men standing on the dock behind Musa and Balderamos Law Firm opened fire on their vessel. Witnesses reported four to five gunshots. In a desperate attempt to escape, the group jumped into the Haulover Creek, with Delly later getting back into the boat and continuing upstream.
Smith was rushed to the KHMH, where he remains in stable condition. Investigators recovered a single 9mm shell casing at the scene, and additional evidence was gathered from behind City Hall on Regent Street.
Police are continuing their investigation into the motive behind the attack, and authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward.
