Gwen Lizarraga High School crowned National Secondary School Sports Association Boys Football Champions

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In a thrilling finale at the Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen, Gwen Lizarraga High School secured the National Secondary School Sports Association (NSSSA) Boys Football Championship title. With a decisive 3-1 victory over Belize High School of Agriculture, Gwen Lizarraga High School proved dominant in the final on Saturday, February 22, 2025.

Striker Calvin Thurton was the star of the match, delivering a hat-trick with goals in the 10th, 25th, and 35th minutes. For his stellar performance in the two-day tournament, Thurton was voted Most Valuable Player (MVP).

Belize High School of Agriculture managed to get on the scoreboard with a 21st-minute goal by Brandon Quijano, but it wasn’t enough to overtake Gwen Lizarraga’s lead.

Gwen Liz reached the final with a 1-0 victory over Belmopan Comprehensive, while Belize High School of Agriculture secured their spot through a dramatic 5-4 penalty shootout against Julian Cho Technical High School after a 1-1 draw.

Gwen Lizarraga High School triumphantly took over from Muffles College, who defeated them in last year’s final. Determined to overcome the heartbreak of that loss, Gwen Liz returned this year with a mission to avenge their defeat. However, the Muffles College’s Bobcats didn’t qualify in the Northern zone. Undeterred, Gwen Liz turned their focus to the next best thing: defeating Muffles’ northern successors, Belize High School of Agriculture (BHSA). And they did that in style.

In the third-place match, Belmopan Comprehensive claimed victory over Julian Cho Technical High School with a 1-0 win, wrapping up an exciting season of secondary school football.

Meanwhile, George Town Technical High School clinched the NSSSA Girls Championship in a tightly contested 1-0 match against Sacred Heart College.
