By Aaron Humes: Court attendees were shocked last Wednesday at the Punta Gorda Magistrate Court when a male defendant attacked Magistrate Sashawna Jody-Ann Thompson during proceedings. The assailant, who was facing multiple charges including burglary and assaulting a police officer, lunged at the magistrate using an electric fan as a weapon.

Witnesses reported that the defendant, who has a history of violence and was recently convicted of attempted murder, jumped out of the dock and targeted Magistrate Thompson. Quick-thinking police officers present in the courtroom sprang into action, managing to subdue the attacker after he also assaulted several officers in his frantic attempt.

Fortunately, initial reports indicate that Magistrate Thompson did not sustain any significant injuries. However, this attack has raised serious concerns about the safety and security of magistrates in the district, especially following previous vocalizations from magistrates regarding inadequate security measures at local courts.

The attacker is believed to be mentally unstable and had been in court for arraignment when the incident unfolded. His record suggests a long history of criminal behavior, and he is said to be from the Silk Grass area, Stann Creek District. As a result of the commotion, all cases scheduled were adjourned until further notice.

Magistrate Thompson, a Jamaican national, has only been serving in her position for 12 days, having been called to the Bar in Belize. The incident highlights the pressing need for improved security protocols to ensure the safety of court employees and the integrity of legal proceedings in the district.
