By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Belize faced a 5-3 defeat against Antigua and Barbuda in the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Qualifiers at St. John’s, Antigua, on Tuesday.
The loss was a tough one for Belize. The Under-20 Belize Women’s National Team (BWNT) fell 4-1 behind but showed incredible resilience, closing the gap to 4-3 with two goals by Khalydia Velasquez and one by Betsy Perez. However, Antigua and Barbuda managed to score once more, sealing the final score at 5-3.
This result puts Belize in last place in the tournament with one point, earned from their 0-0 draw against Guyana in their first outing last Friday. Antigua and Barbuda finish in third place with three points. Guyana, today, shocked Haiti with a 1-0 victory, finishing top in the group with seven points, and qualifying for the CONCACAF Women’s Under-20 Championship.
Guyana’s victory propels them to the next stage, where they join Puerto Rico, Panama, Nicaragua, Canada, Costa Rica, Mexico, and the United States. It was a tough tournament for Belize, landing in last place after a promising start with their 0-0 draw against the group champions, Guyana. But despite the 4-0 loss to Haiti in the second game, the U-20 BWNT fought till the very end on Tuesday against homestanding Antigua and Barbuda.
