International News: Zelensky sees “Good Chance” for peace with Russia amid ceasefire proposal

By Zoila Palma: Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelensky said on Friday that there is now a strong opportunity to end the war with Russia following Ukraine’s acceptance of a U.S. proposal for a 30-day interim ceasefire. However, Moscow has set conditions for agreeing to the truce.

Zelensky expressed optimism on social media, stating, “We have a good chance to end this war quickly and secure peace” with strong support from European allies, Reuters report.

He described the ceasefire as the first step towards peace, but emphasized that the issue of territorial disputes would be more challenging to resolve.

Zelensky urged the U.S. and allies to apply pressure on Russia, warning that President Putin would delay a ceasefire as long as possible. He also said that the ceasefire, covering a 1,000-kilometer frontline, could be monitored with U.S. satellite and intelligence support.

Despite progress, Zelensky acknowledged the difficulty of resolving territorial issues, as Moscow demands Ukraine cede Crimea and other regions, a request Kyiv rejects.

He stressed the need for future security guarantees and air defense coverage in any peace deal.
