Gwen Liz Boys claim NSSSA Softball Championship in dominant fashion

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Gwen Lizarraga High School boys’ softball team demonstrated their dominance yet again by securing the NSSSA Softball Championship title with a resounding 15-5 win over Belmopan Comprehensive School boys in Saturday’s final at the Victor Sanchez Union Field in Punta Gorda, Toledo District.

The game ended in the bottom of the fourth inning under the mercy rule, as Gwen Liz established an insurmountable 10-run lead.

This victory adds to Gwen Liz’s remarkable streak this year, having previously claimed the NSSSA football and basketball championships earlier this year.

Augustine Pitterson, the team’s shortstop, delivered a standout performance in the final, hammering in two home runs and earning MVP honours.

The tournament began with Gwen Liz defeating the northern champions Ladyville Technical 11-8 in the first semifinal on Friday. Belmopan Comprehensive then edged out Independence High School 10-9 in the second semifinal.

In the third-place match, Ladyville Technical boys overwhelmed Independence with a 12-2 victory.

Gwen Liz’s commanding win in the final once again cements their reputation as a powerhouse in Belize’s high school sports.
