By Aaron Humes: The 13-member Upper House is almost complete, with the representation of the social partners and Government named last week.
Following the announcement of Janelle Chanona returning as Senator for Non-Governmental Organizations (NGOs) and Louis Wade appointed for the churches, on Thursday Prime Minister John Briceño named the Government’s appointees: Senior Counsel Eamon Courtenay, putative Minister of State for Finance Christopher Coye; Linsford Castillo; Rozel Arana; Brittney Galvez; and Hector Guerra.
Prime Minister Briceño confirmed that Eamon Courtenay will continue in his role as the Leader of Government Business in the Senate and will serve as the Special Representative for the Prime Minister in areas such as International Legal Affairs, Diplomacy, and Strategic Engagement. This expanded role has drawn reactions, with many drawing parallels to the responsibilities typically held by the Minister of Foreign Affairs.
Christopher Coye will also maintain his position as Minister of State for Finance, under which he will continue to be responsible for ensuring fiscal responsibility and economic growth.
Linsford Castillo, known for his active engagement as the Secretary General of the People’s United Party (PUP), brings valuable organizational experience to the Senate. Rozel Arana, a former Orange Walk Town Councilor and educator, will represent the southern interests of Belize, while Brittney Galvez, who works in the Special Envoy’s Office and holds a Master’s in Public Health, adds a fresh perspective to the legislative chamber.
Additionally, Hector Guerra, a young and emerging leader from Marine Parade Law Chambers, is noted for his strong support of the PUP and is seen as a promising addition to the senatorial team, increasing the representation of legal professionals within the government.
In a complementary development, the Belize Chamber of Commerce & Industry (BCCI) and the Belize Business Bureau (BBB) have endorsed Kevin Herrera for a second term as the Business Sector Senator. Herrera expressed his gratitude upon accepting the endorsement, stating his commitment to fostering policies that support economic growth and sustainable development in Belize.
The trade unions and civil society are reported to have settled on a second term for Glenfield Dennison as their representative.
Meanwhile, on the opposition front, there have been speculations regarding the UDP’s senatorial choices, including former parliamentarians Patrick Faber and Beverly Williams, and Jamal Swazo. However, Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton clarified that no appointments have yet been made, and further announcements will follow once candidates are confirmed.
