By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Carlos Bernárdez provided a bright moment for Belize, scoring in the second minute of the second half against Costa Rica during the CONCACAF Gold Cup Preliminary Round return match in San José.
Despite his effort, Belize trails Costa Rica 6-1 as the home team continue displaying their dominance. The scoring spree began in the opening minute with an unfortunate own goal by Donell Arzu, quickly followed by Alejandro Bran’s long strike in the 6th minute. Alonso Martínez added another in the 8th minute, and Manfred Ugalde’s header in the 36th minute extended the lead to 4-0 before halftime.
In the 66th minute, Bran struck again with a powerful long-range effort for his second goal of the match, making it 5-1. Just three minutes later, Alvaro Zamora added his name to the scoresheet, netting Costa Rica’s sixth goal in the 69th minute.
Once again, Costa Rica demonstrated their ability to score in quick bursts, a hallmark of their performance in the first match as well. With the aggregate score now standing at 13-1, Costa Rica have decisively secured their place in the Gold Cup.
