International News: Ukraine and Russia’s truce agreements hit obstacles

By Zoila Palma: Ukraine and Russia quickly accused each other of violating a truce brokered by the U.S. on energy strikes, and the European Union rejected Russia’s conditions for a ceasefire in the Black Sea.

On Tuesday, the U.S. announced agreements with both countries to pause attacks in the Black Sea and on energy targets, Reuters report.

However, tensions remained high as Ukraine’s President Zelensky claimed the agreements were effective immediately, while Russia said the Black Sea deal wouldn’t be implemented until a sanctioned Russian bank was reinstated in the global payment system, something the EU refused to consider until Russian troops leave Ukraine.

Despite the truce, Russia continued drone attacks on Ukrainian energy facilities, while Ukraine reported Russian drone strikes on multiple cities, including a large attack on Kryvyi Rih.

Zelensky condemned Russia’s actions, calling them a sign that Moscow was not pursuing genuine peace.

The EU reiterated it would not ease sanctions on Russia until it fully withdraws from Ukraine.

NATO officials and European diplomats expressed limited optimism for the ceasefire’s success, noting the ongoing conflict and lack of trust between the parties.
