By Aaron Humes: 16-year-old Cayden Stewart, who drowned while swimming at Gracie Rock on Saturday afternoon, was part of a group enjoying the water after attending a baptism ceremony earlier that day.
Police on Monday said Stewart went down in a deep section of the river. “He went underwater and did not resurface, despite a search initiated by individuals in the area,” Eastern Division Commander ACP Hilberto Romero stated. “There were no visible signs of injury on the body, and it has been taken to the morgue for a postmortem examination.”
Stewart was a student of Edward P. Yorke High School and was well spoken of by his teachers and peers, as well as the Queen Street Baptist Church community. He was laid to rest today following a memorial service. Coincidentally, this church community was also rocked recently by a fire that destroyed its historic meeting place.
