By Rubén Morales Iglesias: As Women’s Month came to a close on Monday, March 31, the Football Federation of Belize (FFB) recognized Miriam Villamil for her remarkable contributions to football development.
“As we celebrate Women’s Month, we honor her trailblazing efforts to uplift the game, empower coaches, and create lasting change both on and off the field,” the FFB said in their recognition of Villamil’s achievements.
The FFB said Villamil, a trailblazer in the sport, holds the distinction of being the first Belizean woman to serve as a Concacaf Consultant, a role in which she helps facilitate coaching education programs and fosters growth within Belize and across the Concacaf region.
With over 15 years of experience in football—first as a player, then as a coach—Miriam has steadily evolved her approach to the sport, now focusing on a broader vision that goes beyond tactics and technique. Her commitment extends to grassroots development, where she ensures that coaching initiatives remain sustainable and effective in shaping the next generation.
Villamil, who hails from Corozal, believes in the power of coaching to uplift not only athletes but entire communities.
“Coaches hold a huge responsibility in shaping and developing players. It’s important to connect with youth development and create an environment where coaches and players alike can grow, evolve, and access the tools they need to thrive,” Villamil said.
“Our role as educators goes beyond the game, it’s about preparing the next generation to become capable, confident, and well-rounded individuals.”

Her passion for women’s football is evident in her continuous efforts to promote inclusivity and create better opportunities for aspiring players and coaches in Belize. She understands that meaningful change happens when young athletes are provided with the right resources and mentorship to develop both on and off the field.
Villamil’s work extends far beyond winning matches—her aim is to strengthen football communities and create a lasting impact through better coaching structures and support systems. As she puts it, “Our role as educators goes beyond the game, it’s about preparing the next generation to become capable, confident, and well-rounded individuals.”
With her vision firmly set on advancing football at all levels, Villamil continues to champion efforts that drive progress for both coaches and players alike. As Belize closed out Women’s Month, Villamil’s dedication reminds us of the vital role women play in shaping the future of football – both within the country and beyond.
