By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police Constable Herman Shaquille Ramos, 31, walked free on Wednesday after being found not guilty of perverting the course of justice in a case tied to a 2022 shooting outside Thirsty Thursday nightclub. A nine-member jury unanimously acquitted Ramos after three hours of deliberation, citing lack of concrete evidence.
Ramos had been accused of taking the firearm used in the shooting—a licensed 9mm Glock belonging to taxi driver Mervin Elvis Domingo—and allegedly removing it from the scene. However, inconsistencies in witness testimonies and lack of direct evidence led to his acquittal.
The case centered on conflicting testimonies from a female passenger in Domingo’s taxi and a fellow police officer. The passenger, a bartender, testified that she saw Ramos take the gun from under the driver’s seat and show it to another officer. However, that officer denied ever seeing Ramos with a firearm.
The prosecution struggled to prove a direct link between Ramos and the disappearance of the gun. Investigators admitted they charged him based on hearsay statements rather than physical evidence.
Further complicating the case, while the firearm was later found at Domingo’s home, both he and all passengers had been in police custody since the shooting, raising questions about how the gun got there.
On October 28, 2022, Domingo fired his licensed firearm in public outside Thirsty Thursday after a vehicle sped past him. He later pleaded guilty to discharging a firearm in public and was fined $1,200 in October 2022.
During the trial, police revealed that surveillance footage showed Ramos removing an item from the taxi, but the prosecution could not conclusively prove it was the gun.
With multiple contradictions and gaps in the prosecution’s case, the jury found reasonable doubt and ruled in Ramos’s favor.
Ramos, who had been on interdiction since the incident, is now a free man. Meanwhile, lingering questions remain about how Domingo’s gun ended up at his house despite being in police custody.
