By Rubén Morales Iglesias: Pathlight Belize, a faith-based non-governmental organization dedicated to supporting students and teachers, held a special recognition ceremony at Pallotti High School on Wednesday, April 9, 2025. The event honoured three fourth-form students who have excelled in the organization’s scholarship program and demonstrated exceptional leadership qualities.
The students recognized were Alexandria Mai, Jaya Flowers, and Samira Hemsley.
Pathlight Belize provides scholarships, mentorship, tutoring, and counseling to students across Belize. The organization operates three centers—in Belize City, Orange Walk, and Belmopan—serving a total of 229 students at both high school and tertiary levels. Scholarships cover tuition fees and essential support services, ensuring recipients have the resources they need to succeed.
Program Manager for Pathlight Belize’s Belize City center, Christina Escalante, highlighted the impact of their support at Pallotti High School and beyond.
“Currently in Belize City, we have students at Pallotti High School, Wesley College, Saint John’s College, Saint Catherine Academy, Edward P Yorke, and Itz-at STEAM Academy,” Escalante said. The Belize City center alone serves ten students at Pallotti, as well as a total of 62 high school students and 32 tertiary-level students.
During the ceremony, the outstanding students were recognized for their achievements, with special emphasis on their dedication to leadership and academic excellence. One of the honorees, Alexandria Mai, was celebrated for her involvement in leadership initiatives and international exchange programs.
“She has been doing great things in our program. She is one of our leadership students,” Escalante shared.
Pallotti High School Principal Rushawn Reynolds-Bowman acknowledged the importance of Pathlight Belize’s support in students’ success.
“It takes an entire community to raise a child. We have the parents, but they also have the support of Pathlight Belize. I have been hearing very good things about Pathlight. If you are their scholar, they take you under their wings, they offer mentoring, they also offer tutoring, printing, and they also offer scholarships beyond high school. We are very grateful for Pathlight here in Belize,” Reynolds-Bowman said.
Beyond academic support, Pathlight Belize actively engages parents and families through its Parenting Association (PPA), which fosters a collaborative environment for student development.
“When it comes to young people, it’s a community effort, and the family plays an integral role in their development,” Escalante explained. Through interactive sessions, parents receive guidance on adolescent development and strategies to support their children.
The program also emphasizes student participation in community service, enrichment trips, sports days, and Christmas programs. Students are expected to engage in after-school programs at the center for structured support.
“The students once they become a recipient, they are expected to come to the center. We have an after-school program, and they are there like three hours per week. Students who need extra help are there every day,” Escalante noted.
“We do spiritual information and character development, which is very important. So, the character development and leadership programs are core areas where we place a lot of emphasis on student growth.”
The recognition ceremony was coordinated the PPA executive team in partnership with local businesses and mentors. Escalante said the PPA executive team played a key role in selecting students who met the program’s criteria for recognition.
“Today’s event was organized by the PPA executive. They wanted to do something for our fourth-formers, our seniors, in collaboration with the mentors and the program manager,” Escalante said.
Adding a special touch to the celebration, Belizean singer Brithney Starr performed for the students, and the fourth-form class was treated to a lunch, making the occasion even more memorable.
With ongoing support from donors and sponsors, Pathlight Belize continues to empower students, strengthen families, and enhance education throughout the country. The organization’s initiatives emphasize leadership development, academic success, and character-building, ensuring that recipients receive holistic support on their journey to higher education.
