By Horace Palacio: The Belize National Teachers Union (BNTU) hosted its longest-ever Annual General Meeting last weekend, gathering over 1,000 educators from all ten branches across the country at the Punta Gorda Sports Complex. The four-day assembly, held from April 5 to April 8, marked a turning point for the union, as it launched a comprehensive review and proposed renewal of its constitution.

Held under the theme “BNTU Promoting Advocacy, Action and Accountability in Education,” the AGM opened with discussions on professional development. By the third day, union business dominated the agenda, and teachers voted in new executive members. Jorge Mejia of the Corozal branch was elected First Vice President, while Keesha Williams (Belize branch) retained her position as Treasurer. Charlene Locario from Belmopan was elected Secretary.

A new initiative introduced during the event saw members participate in an educational tour of the Toledo District. According to BNTU President Nadia Caliz, this is part of a long-term plan to promote national appreciation among teachers. “Many educators teach about Belize’s six districts, but few have had the opportunity to visit them all,” she said.

Caliz, who is currently serving a two-year term as president, admitted the position is demanding and did not confirm whether she will seek re-election in 2026 when the AGM moves to Belize City.
