By Horace Palacio: The Ministry of Health & Wellness has confirmed two positive cases of measles—the first recorded in Belize since 1991. The cases were identified in individuals from the Corozal and Cayo districts who recently returned from a trip to Mexico.
According to a release issued on April 13, 2025, the travelers arrived in Belize on March 31. Two members of the group later developed fever and rash symptoms, prompting health authorities to collect samples, which tested positive for the measles virus. All members of the travel group are currently in isolation and being closely monitored.
This development comes amid a global resurgence of measles, with over 10 million cases reported worldwide in 2023 alone. The Ministry emphasized that measles is highly contagious but entirely preventable through the MMR vaccine (measles, mumps, and rubella), which is typically given to children in two doses—at 12 and 18 months of age.
In response, the Ministry has ramped up national surveillance for fever and rash symptoms and is expanding public access to measles vaccinations. Officials are urging all Belizeans, especially those who are unvaccinated or unsure of their status, to visit the nearest health facility or call the toll-free number 0-800-MOH-CARE for guidance.
A media briefing will be held tomorrow to provide additional updates and information.
