By Horace Palacio: Belize City police have confirmed that the murder of 24-year-old Luis Marin, who was gunned down last Tuesday night in Majestic Alley, was a retaliatory act linked to the recent Belmopan shooting incident.
According to Assistant Commissioner of Police Hilberto Romero, two men, 19-year-old Scorian Stuart and 23-year-old Michael Gillett, were arrested and jointly charged with the crime of murder over the weekend. Marin, a Cotton Tree resident, was visiting a friend in Belize City when he was ambushed and fatally shot. Initial speculation suggested the murder was unrelated, but authorities have confirmed otherwise.
“This is in retaliation for the Belmopan shooting,” Romero stated, adding that the suspects had known interactions with individuals involved in the previous gun violence. However, Romero clarified that police could not confirm whether Stuart and Gillett were in the same vehicle from which the Belmopan shooting originated. When asked whether Marin had been involved in the earlier shooting, Romero said police were still gathering information and did not have evidence to confirm that claim at the time.
Stuart and Gillett appeared in court and were remanded to prison pending further proceedings.
