By Horace Palacio: Belize has taken a decisive step in enhancing its public safety infrastructure with the launch of the CARICOM Integrated Digital Firearms Registration Management System. The new system digitizes essential firearm and ammunition records, ensuring greater accountability, transparency, and traceability.

The Ministry of Home Affairs, in partnership with CARICOM IMPACS and international donors, unveiled the platform during a ceremony in Belmopan. Minister Kareem Musa hailed the initiative as transformative. “It allows for real-time oversight of firearm transactions and custodianship, minimizing risks and maximizing efficiency,” he said.

The move is part of a broader effort to close critical regulatory gaps in Belize’s arms control framework. According to CARICOM IMPACS official Callixtus Joseph, Belize’s swift transition from consultation to implementation showcases the urgency and unity of regional and international partners in addressing arms-related challenges.

Musa also hinted at future upgrades, including the integration of a firearm marking machine to further improve inventory tracking. The deployment of the SAM inventory system is expected to align Belize’s arms control processes with best practices globally.

The U.S. Embassy has expressed support for the initiative, which positions Belize as a proactive partner in regional security efforts. As firearms tracking moves from paper to digital platforms, stakeholders are optimistic that the country will be better equipped to tackle gun-related crime and strengthen oversight mechanisms.
