By Aaron Humes: The Belize Airports Authority (BAA) has announced the implementation of enhanced security measures in light of this morning’s incident at the Corozal Municipal Airstrip.

The BAA expressed its appreciation for the rapid response of law enforcement and emergency agencies that addressed this morning’s hijacking situation, ensuring public safety throughout the process. The authority has extended its gratitude to all involved parties for their professionalism and swift action.

The BAA reassured travelers and stakeholders that the organization prioritizes safety at all municipal airstrips across Belize. While the investigation into the incident is still ongoing, the BAA is committed to upholding the highest safety standards.

Since January 2025, the BAA has been working on comprehensive plans to improve security protocols, which include implementing passenger bag checks and the installation of advanced scanning equipment. These initiatives are not a direct response to today’s event, but are instead part of a long-term strategy aimed at elevating safety measures across all aerodromes in Belize.

The BAA, in close collaboration with the Department of Civil Aviation and operating airlines, is set to roll out these enhanced security measures in phases, with implementation expected to commence in the coming weeks. These efforts are geared toward aligning Belize’s municipal airstrips with international best practices, ensuring a secure travel environment for all passengers.

“Our commitment to improving the travel experience while maintaining the highest standards of safety and security remains unwavering,” the BAA stated. “We thank the public for its continued trust and support as we take these important steps.”
