By Breaking Belize News Staff: The sentencing of 34-year-old Denroy Moss, a single father and runman of Daly Street in Belize City, was delayed today after a failed attempt to reverse his guilty plea in a prohibited firearm case.
Moss, who had been remanded to the Belize Central Prison, appeared unrepresented before a Magistrate in Court #8 this morning. Although he initially pleaded guilty on Monday to charges of keeping a prohibited firearm—a homemade gun—and five live rounds of .38 ammunition, Moss surprised the court today by attempting to change his plea back to not guilty.
However, the prosecutor rejected the change, and the Magistrate adjourned the matter for further discussion until April 28, 2025.
The case had been progressing after Moss previously requested a sentencing indication, where the court informed him he was facing a potential 5-year sentence. He accepted the likely prison term after learning deductions—such as one-third off for an early guilty plea—could reduce his sentence significantly.
During his earlier appearance, Moss brought a character witness to speak on his behalf: his babysitter, who has been caring for his child since his incarceration. Moss explained that he never intended to keep the firearm, stating that it was something he had planned to discard but hadn’t yet done so when police found it.
Following his Court #8 appearance, Moss was taken to Court #2, where he saw a 2024 charge of common assault dismissed for want of prosecution. The case, involving an alleged assault on a Bangladeshi businessman, was thrown out after the virtual complainant could not be located.
Despite the dismissal of the assault charge, Moss remains on remand at the Belize Central Prison due to the severity of the gun offense. The court will determine how to proceed with his plea change request later this month.
