By Aaron Humes: The Government of Belize and Department of Civil Aviation have promised a “thorough inquiry” into the events of this morning when Tropic Air flight 9N711 from Corozal Town to San Pedro Town was hijacked and diverted, ultimately resulting in one death and three injuries.
In a brief recounting of events, a press statement notes that pilot Howell Grange managed to keep his Cessna Caravan airborne for 1 hour 40 minutes amid threats from the single hijacker, who attacked fellow passengers and demanded to be taken to the United States. Grange and two passengers among the 14 onboard sustained injuries while the hijacker, Akinyela Sawa Taylor, 49, was shot and died in hospital after a safe landing at Philip Goldson International Airport. In heartening news, those injured are expected to fully recover.
The Government points to the rarity of the event, as more than 120 thousand flights cross the skies without incident each year, but today’s landmark situation raises concerns despite the bravery of those aboard and the professionalism of the security forces.
The Department has consistently upheld stringent safety standards and risk management protocols. Though previous assessments indicated a low risk of unlawful interference in domestic operations, ongoing discussions to enhance airport security were already taking place prior to this event, including negotiations with specialized security service providers.
In light of this incident, the Department reassures both local and international travelers that safety remains the highest priority. While there is no evidence linking this attack to broader threats, as a proactive measure, heightened security protocols will be instituted immediately at all domestic airports. These measures aim to protect passengers, crew, and aircraft without causing significant disruption.
The Government of Belize is dedicated to upholding a secure aviation environment and will continue to work alongside national and international partners to ensure alignment with the highest global safety standards. The Department will also refine its security procedures according to evolving international best practices to enhance overall safety in Belize’s air travel sector.
