By Rubén Morales Iglesias: In recognition of her outstanding contributions to sustainable farming, the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) has named Noemi Requena as the Woman Farmer of the Year for 2025.
Her dedication to environmentally friendly agriculture and her commitment to empowering local communities set her apart as a leader in Belize’s agricultural sector, MAFSE said in a statement.
Originally from San Pedro Columbia Village, Toledo District, Requena now resides in Punta Gorda Town, where she has cultivated an impressive farm featuring a diverse range of vegetables, fruit trees, and livestock. Raised in a household that valued regenerative agricultural practices, her early exposure to innovative farming methods shaped her approach to soil conservation, composting, and sustainable land management.
A Lifelong Commitment to Education
“Despite having her hands full caring for her family, she has found time to pursue educational goals, maintain employment, and mentor many in good agricultural practices extensively,” MAFSE stated.
Requena’s educational journey began at San Pedro Columbia R.C. School, followed by Toledo Community College. She later earned an Associate Degree in Business Administration at the University of Belize’s Toledo Campus. Though she couldn’t pursue an agricultural career at the University of Belize’s Central Farm Campus, she remained committed to expanding her agricultural knowledge.
Her education extends beyond Belize, having completed an intensive agriculture training program in Colombia and participated in an exchange visit to New Mexico, USA. She has also contributed to international and regional agricultural projects, collaborating with professionals in regenerative agriculture.
Leading Through Mentorship
“Miss Requena continues to inspire and encourage other women to become leaders in agriculture, a sector traditionally dominated by men,” MAFSE stated.
Beyond her own farming success, Requena is dedicated to educating and mentoring others, particularly women and youth. She has mentored school children’s groups, teaching them regenerative agriculture, composting, and organic vegetable cultivation. She has also organized workshops for women in agriculture and has represented Belize in international farming exchanges.
Sustainable Farming Innovations
Requena’s farm is a diversified agricultural operation, incorporating inga alley cropping techniques, green manuring, and vermicomposting to enhance soil conservation and regeneration. She also produces her own biofertilizers, ensuring the long-term productivity and sustainability of her land.
Recognizing Excellence in Belizean Agriculture
Alongside Requena’s recognition, MAFSE has named Gregorio Esquivel as 2025 Farmer of the Year and Juan Ricardo Carrillo as Junior Farmer of the Year. These honours celebrate the dedication and innovation of Belizean farmers who are shaping the future of sustainable agriculture.
