The Vatican made the announcement early Sunday morning, marking the end of a papacy that reshaped the tone and direction of the Catholic Church.

His death follows a series of health complications that began earlier this year. He spent 38 days in the hospital battling bronchitis, bilateral pneumonia, and kidney issues. Despite those challenges, the Pope appeared in public on Saturday, smiling and blessing the faithful gathered at St. Peter’s Square for Easter Sunday.

Born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in Argentina, Francis became the first Jesuit Pope and the first from Latin America when he was elected in 2013 after the resignation of Pope Benedict XVI.

His time as pontiff will be remembered for its emphasis on mercy, humility, and social justice. He advocated for the poor, refugees, and the environment, and famously challenged the global Church to become more inclusive—asking, “Who am I to judge?” in reference to LGBTQ believers.

Pope Francis’s death has prompted tributes from global leaders. King Charles expressed deep sorrow, and world figures like UK Labour leader Sir Keir Starmer praised his “tireless efforts to promote a world that is fairer for all.”

The Catholic Church in Belize joins the global community in mourning his loss. The Diocese of Belize City and Belmopan is expected to hold memorial services this week, with flags flying at half-mast at Catholic institutions throughout the country.

A papal conclave will soon be convened to elect the next pope, continuing a centuries-old tradition.
