Anglican Diocese of Belize offers condolences following Pope Francis’ passing

By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Anglican Diocese of Belize has extended its heartfelt condolences to the Roman Catholic Church following the passing of Pope Francis, highlighting his impactful leadership and unwavering dedication to social justice.

In an official press release dated April 21, 2025, Rt Rev Philip Wright, M.A., OBE, Lord Bishop of Belize, reflected on Pope Francis’ profound contributions to the global Christian community. The Diocese praised the late pontiff’s advocacy for the marginalized, his commitment to unity, and his efforts to foster compassion.

“We pray that God’s Holy Spirit provides comfort and strength during this time of bereavement,” the Diocese stated in the release, acknowledging Pope Francis’ reputation as the “people’s Pope” and his outreach to the poor and excluded.

The Diocese also noted Pope Francis’ dedication to interfaith engagement, his support for increased roles for women in the Church, and his efforts to break down divisions among Christian communities. His leadership, the release ephasized, transcended religious boundaries, inspiring millions worldwide to pursue justice and mercy.

Reflecting on his lasting legacy, the Diocese cited Rt Rev Anthony Poggo, Secretary-General of the Anglican Communion, who said, “Throughout his papacy Pope Francis has consistently demonstrated a profound commitment to social justice, mercy, and reconciliation. His words and actions have touched the hearts of millions, transcending the boundaries of Christian divisions and inspiring people of all faiths to join hands in pursuit of a more just and compassionate world.”

The Anglican Diocese of Belize concluded its message with a final prayer: “May Light Perpetual shine on him and may he rest in peace. May his memory be a blessing to us all.”
