Mass stranding of Pilot Whales reported near Drown Caye, Belize City

By Zoila Palma: A mass stranding of pilot whales has been reported near Drown Caye, just off the coast of Belize City.

The Clearwater Marine Aquarium Research Institute Belize, in coordination with the Belize Fisheries Department and the Ministry of Blue Economy, is leading emergency response efforts.

Authorities are urging all marine vessels and the public to avoid the area to reduce stress on the animals and ensure the safety of responders. Approaching the whales—whether by boat or in the water—is strictly discouraged, as the distressed marine mammals may behave unpredictably.

Anyone who spots stranded whales or related activity is asked to immediately contact the response team at 615-3838.

Efforts are underway to assess the situation and provide necessary aid to the affected pod.
