By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Cycling Federation of Belize has released the official results of the 95th Holy Saturday Cross Country Cycling Classic, confirming Jim Brown’s winning time of 5 hours, 45 minutes, and 40 seconds, along with the finishing times of other top competitors.
Brown, racing for Miami Blazers, became the first Great Britain-born rider to win the event, triumphing after a 140-mile battle from Belize City to San Ignacio-Santa Elena and back. His time fell just over six minutes short of last year’s record set by Honduran Luis López (5:39:25.418).
A total of 110 cyclists lined up for the prestigious event, but only 49 completed the race. Six finished outside the time limit, two were disqualified, and 59 did not finish. Of the 119 riders who registered, nine did not start the race.
Race highlights saw early breakaways as Alfredo Bueno (Legion of Los Angeles) and Pablo Abreo (Team Tenis Stars) attempted initial attacks before being caught by the peloton, where Belizean cyclists Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow), Jyven Gonzalez (G-Flow), Carlton Robinson (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), Delton Rojas (Rollin Shattaz), Cory Williams (Miami Blazers), Goran Gabourel (A. Mahler Digi Alliance), Giovanni Lovell (Lovell Cycling Team), and Steven Cabral (Cabral Marin Team) maintained a strong national presence.
By Unitedville, the lead group reshaped into 12 riders, featuring Brown, Bueno, Uriel Omar Espinoza (Colombia), José Alarcón (Venezuela), Abreo, Jean Michel Lachance (Canada), Patrick Raines (United States), Chavarria, Quiroz, Robinson, and Williams.
During the return leg past Mount Hope, the group splintered, leaving nine riders in the lead: Brown, Bueno, Espinoza, Alarcón, Quiroz, Williams, Abreo, Lachance, and Raines. Defending champion Luis López (Honduras) rejoined the front but was dropped before Mile 22.
Approaching Hattieville, Brown and Bueno broke away, building a four-minute lead before engaging in a tense head-to-head sprint. In the final stretch in Belize City, on Princess Margaret Drive, Brown made his move, launching a powerful attack just yards from the finish, securing a solo victory, with Bueno settling for second and Espinoza taking third.
Belize’s Derrick Chavarria (G-Flow) put up a commendable effort, finishing fourth overall, followed closely by Belizean-American Cory Williams (Miami Blazers) in fifth.

Brown’s victory has added another thrilling chapter to Belize’s most prestigious cycling event, ensuring that fans and riders alike eagerly anticipate next year’s edition, where Belizeans hope to reclaim the Cross Country Classic title—last won by Oscar Quiroz in 1993.
