By Aaron Humes: Belize is actively responding to a rising threat posed by the New World Screwworm, with more than 50 confirmed cases reported across several districts since the pest was first detected in December 2024. The Belize Agricultural Health Authority (BAHA) and the Ministry of Agriculture, Food Security, and Enterprise (MAFSE) have issued urgent calls for animal health precautions as the infestation impacts local livestock.

Agriculture Minister Jose Mai emphasized the seriousness of the situation during a recent press interview. “Our first case was on December 27, and to date, we have seen over 50 cases of screwworms. Mexico, which was infected five weeks prior, is dealing with close to 600 cases,” he noted.

According to the Minister, Belize remains the only country not to be given sterile flies to counter the threat by the U.S. Government for reasons unknown, despite Prime Minister John Briceno saying last month that Belize was in line for such assistance.

The Toledo District is experiencing the most significant outbreak, reporting 27 cases, while the Cayo District has reported four, with single cases in Belize and Orange Walk Districts. Affected animals include cattle, pigs, dogs, sheep, and even a horse.

In light of these developments, officials are urging the public to take proactive measures, including inspecting animals regularly and treating any wounds with approved larvicides. The early reporting of suspected cases is vital to curb any potential outbreaks. All instances of myiasis, an infestation of wounds with larvae, should be reported immediately to BAHA or Ministry offices, or healthcare providers.

The authorities have reminded the public to declare all animals, pets included, upon arrival at designated Animal Movement Control Points in Sandhill, Bullet Tree Falls, and Jalacte. It is critical for these animals to possess a New World Screwworm Health Inspection Certificate and Movement Permit, with transportation occurring only during daylight hours for visibility and safety.

Additionally, those planning to import animals into Belize must seek prior approval from BAHA and avoid using non-established entry points. Violating the New World Screwworm Prevention, Control, and Eradication Regulations may result in severe penalties, including hefty fines or imprisonment.

The community’s role is paramount in tackling this urgent health issue. Individuals who suspect larval infestations in livestock are encouraged to report findings to BAHA’s Animal Health Department at designated contact numbers. Authorities are stressing the importance of collective action in safeguarding the nation’s livestock population and protecting public health.
