By Breaking Belize News Staff: A young Ladyville resident is counting his blessings this weekend after narrowly avoiding jail time following a drug conviction in the Belize City Magistrate’s Court.
Elmer Jimenez, 20, a landscaper from the Perez Road area, appeared unrepresented before newly appointed Magistrate Ludlow Black where he pleaded guilty to possession of an undetermined amount of crack cocaine. Jimenez was caught on April 24, 2025, at Mile 12 on the Philip Goldson Highway.
In court, Jimenez admitted he threw the crack cocaine onto the ground upon seeing the police. He alleged that officers beat him during his arrest, bursting his eardrum, and claimed his rights were violated.
Acknowledging his drug addiction, Jimenez told the court that he spent nearly half of his daily $35 earnings on feeding his habit. He vowed to seek help, relocate to a calmer environment, and turn his life around.
Given that this was his first offense, Magistrate Black imposed a $200 fine plus $5 court costs, with a payment deadline of May 30, 2025. Failure to pay will result in one month imprisonment. Jimenez promised to work and pay the fine, grateful for the second chance.
