By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The liturgical Rite of Sealing Pope Francis’ coffin took place in St. Peter’s Basilica on Friday, April 25, at 8:00 pm Vatican time (12:00 pm Belize time), Vatican News said.

Presided over by Cardinal Kevin Farrell, Camerlengo of the Holy Roman Church, the solemn ceremony marked the end of public viewing, during which over 50,000 people visited the Altar of the Confession to pay their final respects.

Several Cardinals and Holy See officials were present, including Cardinals Giovanni Battista Re, Pietro Parolin, Roger Mahony, Domenique Mamberti, Mauro Gambetti, Baldassare Reina, and Konrad Krajewski, along with other Vatican dignitaries and Pope Francis’ secretaries.

The sealing of the coffin preceded the funeral Mass on Saturday, April 26, at 10:00 am (2:00 am Belize Time) in St. Peter’s Square, which will the Novemdiales, a traditional nine-day mourning period. Daily Masses for the late Pontiff’s repose are being held in St. Peter’s Basilica at 5:00 pm (9:00 am Belize), except for Divine Mercy Sunday, April 27, when Mass will take place at 10:30 am (2:30 am Belize) in St. Peter’s Square.
