By Breaking Belize News Staff: Police are investigating a fatal workplace accident that claimed the life of a Mexican construction foreman on Saturday afternoon, 3.5 miles north of San Pedro Town.

Around 1:22 p.m., police responded to reports of a man who had fallen from a construction site. On arrival, officers found 40-year-old Hever Badal Torres of Cunduacán, Tabasco, Mexico, lying face-up under the ground floor of an unfinished metal structure. Above him, a section of galvanized zinc flooring had been torn away.

Initial investigations revealed that Torres had been working on the rooftop alongside two other Mexican workers, Salvador Villa Gomez Opengo and Raul Mendoza Cruz, when the accident occurred. Torres was last seen hauling galvanized zinc toward the northwestern corner of the building — the last section needing completion — before a loud bang was heard. His coworkers later found him unresponsive below the building.

Emergency responders administered CPR on-site, but efforts to revive him were unsuccessful. Torres was officially pronounced dead at the San Pedro Polyclinic at 4:00 p.m. by Dr. Nairobi Almira.

Preliminary findings suggest Torres may have stepped on a weakened portion of the roof, causing it to collapse and sending him plunging through to the ground. He sustained severe head injuries, a broken right elbow, and multiple lacerations.

Torres’ body has been transported to the K.H.M.H. morgue in Belize City, where it awaits a post-mortem examination. Investigations are ongoing.
