Police investigate fatal fall at building site north of San Pedro Town

By Horace Palacio: Police in Ambergris Caye are investigating the death of a construction foreman who fell through the roof of a building under construction north of San Pedro Town.

Around 1:22 p.m. on Saturday, April 26, 2025, police responded to a report of a man who had fallen at a construction site located about 3.5 miles north of town. Upon arrival, investigators discovered the lifeless body of 40-year-old Hever Badal Torres, a Mexican national and construction foreman from Cunduacán, Tabasco, Mexico.

Torres was found lying face-up under the ground floor of an unfinished metal structure. Observations revealed a ripped section of galvanized zinc flooring above him, indicating he had fallen through while working.

Preliminary investigations revealed that Torres was working alongside two other construction workers, Salvador Villa Gomez Opengo and Raul Mendoza Cruz, at the time of the accident. While the men were carrying out roofing tasks, Torres had been hauling galvanized zinc sheets toward the northwest corner of the structure. Minutes later, his coworkers heard a loud noise and found Torres unresponsive on the ground below.

Emergency responders attempted CPR at the scene but were unsuccessful. Torres was later pronounced dead at the San Pedro Polyclinic.

Police investigations suggest that Torres may have stepped onto a weakened section of the galvanized zinc roofing, which gave way, causing him to fall to the ground. His body showed severe injuries, including a major head wound, a broken elbow, and several lacerations.

The body has been transported to the Karl Heusner Memorial Hospital (KHMH) morgue in Belize City, where a post-mortem examination will be conducted. Investigations into the circumstances surrounding the accident are ongoing.
