By Rubén Morales Iglesias: The Edmund Marshalleck Stadium in Benque Viejo del Carmen erupted in celebration as Verdes FC secured their ninth national title (eight Premier League titles and one under the FFB precursor, the Belize National Football Association) with a decisive 2-0 victory over the San Pedro Pirates in the second leg of the Closing Championship final. The win sealed a 4-0 aggregate triumph, cementing Verdes’ outstanding 2024-2025 season.

After a tense first half, Verdes broke the deadlock in the 75th minute when Krisean Lopez found the back of the net, sending the home crowd into a frenzy. Just five minutes later, Jordy Polanco doubled the lead with a clinical finish, effectively putting the game—and the championship—beyond the Pirates’ reach.

The Pirates, who faced an uphill battle after a 2-0 loss in the first leg at Ambergris Stadium, struggled to break through Verdes’ resolute defense, led by veteran goalkeeper Woodrow West. Despite valiant efforts from key players like Moises Martinez, Jaheim Mena, and Keydenshaay Bowen, the Pirates were unable to mount a comeback.

Verdes’ victory was driven by their tactical discipline and attacking prowess, with standout performances from Lopez, Desmond Wade and Polanco, the midfield maestro. The Green Machine’s home-field advantage and unwavering support from their fans proved decisive in their championship run.

As the final whistle blew, Verdes players and supporters celebrated their hard-earned title, marking the culmination of months of hard work and determination. The victory also secures Verdes a spot in the prestigious Concacaf Central American Cup, further solidifying their status as one of Belize’s premier football clubs.

For the San Pedro Pirates, the loss marks the end of a valiant campaign, in which but their journey to the finals proved their resilience and potential. With a young and talented squad, the Pirates will undoubtedly aim to bounce back stronger in the next season.

Verdes have now won nine national titles total, dating back to 1986.
