Belize participates in 93rd extraordinary meeting of International Regional Committee on Agricultural Health

By Zoila Palma: Belize is being represented at the 93rd extraordinary meeting of CIRSA, the Comité Internacional Regional de Sanidad Agropecuaria or International Regional Committee on Agricultural Health in El Salvador.

CIRSA is made up of ministers of agriculture of the Central American region and is the parent body of OIRSA, the International Regional Organization for Plant and Animal Health, which has a mandate to ensure pests and diseases are controlled and eradicated in all countries in the region.

Minister of Agriculture Jose Abelardo Mai has the presidency of CIRSA, which is rotated among Central American ministers of agriculture.

High on the agenda for discussion at the CIRSA meeting is the control and eradication of the New World Screwworm.

The Ministry of Agriculture noted that all Central American countries have cases of infestation, and during the meeting ministers have made reports on the state of their country’s situation with regard to the screwworm.

The focus of the Central American region is the New World Screwworm and its control and eradication.
