Five new measles cases confirmed in Belize, all from Cayo District

By Horace Palacio: The Ministry of Health and Wellness (MOHW) has confirmed five new cases of measles in Belize, all originating from the Cayo District. This brings the total number of confirmed cases to seven, following two imported cases detected on April 12th.

According to the MOHW, the new infections were traced to close contacts of the original patients, with all five individuals coming from the same household. A rapid response was triggered by health officials who began screening close contacts, particularly within the school community.

Over twenty individuals linked to the new cases were tested, including twelve who were fully vaccinated, five unvaccinated, and four with unknown vaccination status. Fourteen samples were sent to Mexico for confirmation, and all returned negative results.

Despite that, the ministry continues to monitor the situation closely. While there is no evidence of community-wide spread at this time, officials are urging the public to remain vigilant and ensure that their vaccination records are up to date.

The national vaccination campaign remains active across the country, and MOHW is encouraging anyone experiencing symptoms such as fever, rash, red eyes, or cough to seek medical attention immediately.
