By Aaron Humes: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Taegar-Panton says the Government has hastily set dates for the ceremonial opening of Parliament and reading of the Budget, some seven weeks after the general election.
Despite the Government’s confidence heading into March 12, there has been no indication of the Budget estimates and plans for addressing the issues on the Government’s plate, ranging from increases in salaries and allowances for public servants to addressing crime, health, education and other issues.
Taegar-Panton argues that the Budget will reveal “Hard times are here,” with expected belt-tightening and a shrinking economy except for a favored few.
And even that general election result was marred by blatant fraud, Taegar-Panton charged, citing issues with voter transfers particularly in Cayo North, and behaviour “that crossed every line” by the ruling party; in her own Albert Division, she said, able-bodied men and women apparently lost their faculties while voting or being encouraged to vote for her opponent, and Government’s resources were “shamelessly used.”
