By Horace Palacio: Leader of the Opposition Tracy Panton is warning that Belize is at risk of spiraling into a full-blown crisis if the government continues what she describes as reckless spending and unchecked political arrogance. In her first national address since assuming leadership of the Opposition, Panton raised the alarm on what she sees as the Briceño administration’s disregard for both financial accountability and democratic norms.
“The government continues to spend indiscriminately from the public purse without an approved budget,” she stated, calling the practice both “outrageous” and “dangerous.” According to Panton, this kind of fiscal mismanagement undermines the very foundation of democratic governance, where public resources are meant to be managed transparently and with legislative oversight.
She likened the country’s current political and economic trajectory to a “bubbling pot,” referencing recent remarks by the President of the Belize National Teachers’ Union (BNTU). Panton said that the frustration brewing among teachers, unions, public officers, and ordinary Belizeans is growing too loud to ignore.
“This administration operates with arrogance and entitlement, while families struggle to meet basic needs and inflation eats away at livelihoods,” she added. Her message to Belizeans was clear: the moment to hold the government accountable is now—before the situation boils over beyond repair.
Panton pledged to lead an Opposition that stays laser-focused on the issues that truly matter—economic justice, institutional transparency, and the protection of Belize’s democratic ideals.
