By Horace Palacio: The Leader of the Opposition, Tracy Panton, has issued a sharp rebuke against what she describes as a blatant abuse of power by state agents following the attempted arrest of Senator Patrick Faber during the party’s first post-election press conference.
While reaffirming her belief in the rule of law and personal accountability, Panton raised questions about the timing of the police’s actions, calling it “sinister” and politically motivated. Faber, who was a speaker at the press event, was reportedly approached by officers hours after an alleged altercation with police the previous evening. Panton contends that if the allegations of aggravated assault and obstruction of justice were legitimate, then Faber should have been arrested immediately—not in front of cameras during a national broadcast.
“Why wasn’t the Senator arrested on the spot when the alleged incident occurred?” Panton asked. “Instead, the authorities waited for a nationally televised moment to make their move. That reeks of something far more orchestrated than simple law enforcement.”
She called on newly appointed Commissioner of Police, Dr. Rosado, to urgently address what she described as a growing culture of abuse and political interference within the police force.
Despite the disruption, Panton encouraged Belizeans to stay focused on critical national issues, including the government’s ongoing spending without an approved budget, which she labeled “outrageous” and “dangerous.” Panton warned that the country’s democracy is “in peril” and urged citizens to remain alert and engaged.
